Chlorine

Chlorine is added to the water supply by cities and municipalities to guarantee that the water being provided for drinking, cooking, and bathing is bacteria free. However, the amount of chlorine often meets or exceeds the levels found in swimming pools. It only takes a small amount of chlorine to make water potable, i.e. safe to drink, but municipalities and cities often over-chlorinate as a precaution.
